DOWNTIME
Fourtower
- Morgan put 168gp in the bank. He also spent time with the Moorland Merchant Manager Pinky Preston who gave him a mission to deliver supplies (5) to a caravan that is stuck in the Greenbottle Morass.
- Dan the Wolf lived in the woods, bartering his Glaive for food. Dan wants to rule as a powerful Knight hunter lord. Takes on mission to take out HD 4 creature to become a Warden Ranger.
- Sedilla is hired for the first time along with Sidwell and Nadia. Sedilla (Human Mage 1 HD - matted white hair, red robes, whispers everything). She was met making a rope dance like a snake at a table at the Moorland Magpie. She smiled at the two men, “Are you adventurers? I’d like to find some new spells if you’d allow me to come with you.”
EXPEDITION 26
7th day of the 10th week of winter. Overcast.
Morgan bought two supplies and Dan showed concern for Millie after she shared about her two dogs going missing (Moose and Bear; Retrievers). Sedilla filled her pack with the 5 supplies from Pinky Preston and they set off.
Travel action to Greenbottle. Encounter: Geoffrey the Headless Skull Knight. Reaction: Friendly
Up ahead on the road they could see a slight figure in plate armor sharpening its sword. It was headless.
“I think it is some type of living armor,” Morgan growled.
The armor clanked as it lifted up a skull and turned it both ways of the King’s Road. “Guess not.”
Dan clutched his diamond flute, “I’m going to play my flute and run.”
The rest of the party hid behind a nearby knoll and Dan played his flute. The armor jerked towards him and he high-tailed it. He could hear the armor bounding behind him and then a voice “HEY! Stop! Geoffrey wants to see you!”
Dan stopped and responded to he cheerful voice emitting from the carried skull.
What ensued was a cheerful conversation between the party and Sir Geoffrey. He told them he has lived for 4000 years, but was brought here by his mage-master to guard the road after Stonehell was broken open. At one point he demonstrated his power to Dan by beaming a ray of rainbow energy from his mouth at a nearby tree, setting it aflame. After that, Morgan wanted out. “Uh Dan,” he hissed, “Maybe don’t continue the conversation with the highly unstable and magic-cursed knight!”
They politely parted ways and Geoffrey said if they ever needed protecting, he’d be on it.
Greenbottle Morass
They passed by Floater’s shack and spent an hour searching for wagon tracks. Dan found some and it led to a cemetary of weathered stone pilllars and headstones and a small sunken mausoluem. A wagon canvas covered several bodies. 4 bowmen were roasting a horse over their pitiful fire. Two broken wagons rested in the mud like giant ribcages.
Ground-Bound (Elf - solid, moving galley tattoos, mud stained, drawl) was their lead bodyguard. He told them their group was attacked by the Mother Stirge and her swarm. “Siphoned 7 of them dry. Torvik there lost a lot of blood,” he motioned to a pale man on a bedroll close to the flames. “We’ve been waiting for a supply party.”
Morgan told them about Geoffrey and gave them the supplies that made up a blood infusion set. Ground-Bound gave them some supplies they couldn’t take anymore along with a Potion of Ogre Strength in gratitude. “There was another Moorland Merchant with us. His name was Carlyle. Ran off when that bug attacked. Try to help him if you find him. He has a embroidered yellow coat. Can’t miss him.”
Sedilla helped administer the blood and blessed Ground-Bound.
“I hope everything ends well for you in Frytornsbro.”
Stonehell Valley
At the valley gatehouse there were new human prints in the snow. In the stairwell, Sidwell lit his red and yellow lantern and got behind Morgan. “After all this time Sidwell, you still won’t fight for us?”
Sidwell spit out some tobacco, “Heh. I know my lane. I don’t ask for no more.”
STONEHELL
Down the stairwell they went. 10 meters, 20 meters, 30 meters underground. It was silent.
Exploration turn. 5 Light Dice/5 Characters = Bright Light. At the bottom, 3 Light Dice are left.
Sidwell cursed, “My oil’s burning quick.”
They searched out a room with blood and bones. A howl of wind coursed through the space “FOOLS! FLEE BEFORE YOUR BONES REST HERE EVERMORE!!! MUAHAHHEAHUAHAYAH!” Sidwell just about wet his pants. Dan and Morgan were unphased. “There is an enchantment over this room,” Sedilla sensed.
Dan smirked “Break it then.”
Sedilla coloured “I’m not that strong yet…sorry.”
Further in they came across a pit trap. Sedilla cast a spell on her rope to get across. The rest moved back into the blood and bones room to search it out completely. Sidwell stayed between, breaking out his knitting project. Suddenly, screeches and shambling of multiple creatures could be heard.
Exploration turn. 3 LD. Encounter: 12 giant rats hauling a half-eaten orc corpse.
They sprang into action, tightroping one at a time across the pit trap. Sedilla was second to last.
Sidwell pulled the rope taught “Hurry up, I don’t want to lose my toes!”
Putting trust into her spell, Sedilla gingerly tested the rope. She hurried but then lost her balance. An awful scream was followed by a horrible crack of bone. Dan watched her body spasm for a moment, a wooden spike through her heart. Sidwel cursed and crossed the pit with the help of his 3m pole just as the giant rats make it to the edge of the pit. They screech and squeek eagerly for Sedilla’s body, which they left. Dan lit another torch.
In a smashed dormitory with hundred of tally marks on the walls, Dan found a whittling dagger (3dmg). Two blocks of pine wood and a half finished peacock carving laid forgotten in smashed dresser.
Past a one way door that Sidwell held, they discovered a masterwork of dwarven stonework, recently dusted and cleaned. Pieces were removed from a wrap around bas-relief of the MOTHER (Giant worm) being attacked by a galley of undead lancers.
Down a south hallway they could hear more rats. Out of another room came 5 centipedes secreting cement destritus on the flagstone fractures. Morgan gave the signal for Nadia to shoot one when they attacked.
Dan was bit loads but crushed two. Morgan speared one and Nadia striked another. The last scuttled away. Morgan began to pursue but a trash heap covered in a dozen giant rats sent him scuttling back to the group.
Back at the spiral staircase they entered a ruined kitchen which they searched through meticulously. Dan uncovered a rusty water pump that squelched oddly every time he pumped it. All of the sudden, a glop of lime slime lopped out. 1
The slime won initiative, getting its first attack on Dan.
The slime made its way up Dan’s legs as he screamed. It was burning away his clothing and flesh. Immediately he pushed his torch into the creature. It squeeled like a boiling lobster. Morgan quickly lit an additional torch and also burned the slime and Morgan in the process.
It was too late.
The slime crawled the rest of the way up Dan’s shape.
He thought of Geoffrey’s kindness. What could’ve been if he would have become his squire and learned his magicks? He thought of his brother. He came here to do what his brother did but would die a much stupider death. The irony. He thought.
“AAHaHAHhhgggAAH!” Were his last words as he plunged his torch into his melting body.
He thought no more.
Nadia withheld her vomit by the door as the slime entered the corpse’s mouth. Morgan ran to her “Nadia, get back! We need to leave him!”
The remaining three scrambled away and up the stairs. Outside Morgan fell to the ground.
“I never thought I’d live to see days such as these. This world is hell. A mage dead on spikes. Dan was dumb, but he had the spirit. He was the best of us.” Morgan looked over his shoulder at the stairwell. “I’m sorry Dan. I’m sorry.”
Fourtower
“How many of us have you seen die Sidwell?”
The porter looked at the veiled sun grimly. “Maybe 5? 6 now? Many dwarves. One to a slime like your friend. It does my digestion no good when an employer dies.”
Morgan bade farewell and met with Pinky Preston. He gave him minor pay (50gp) and future discount for supplies (8gp instead of 10gp) with the Moorland Merchants. “Stick around us and you’ll learn more. We got a lot to teach ya!”
The Moorland Magpie was busy with costumers. Morgan sat next to a muscular farmer with only his left arm and bought his drink for his tales as a retired knight (Farmer Ben). He told tale of a wooden keep he had in the north before the Moorlands fell. Lost his arm to a wyvern obsessed with jewels and gems. He took that to his advantage and wounded the fell beast. Somewhere that wyvern is still out there. Weakened.
That night, Dusk-Dancer (Elf 1 - blue/green feathers in hair and fancy clothes, contrary, elegant) spent his first night in Fourtower at the Moorland Magpie Inn.
Warden Notes
This is not your cute Green Slime. DURF Green Slimes do 6 damage each round they are attached (not including the obligated 2 friendly-fire damage), making them nearly fatal to any 1-3 HD creature. If I double checked this before the encounter, I think I would’ve added more warning. But hey, he pumped that thing without precaution.↩
